When it comes to crafting and the needle arts, I feel like there’s a lot of propaganda out there. Here’s a few things that you shouldn’t fall for
1- There’s isn’t a right or wrong way to embroider.
Do what works for you! I love teaching classes to help makers learn to basics and beyond, but that doesn’t mean you have to stitch exactly like I do. Every maker is different and you need to figure out how stitching works for you, whether that’s adjusting a stitch, figuring out your own style, or just where you like to craft.
2- The hoop back should look nice.
I was taught this growing up and I think it can lead to a lot of imposter syndrome. The back does not need to look good. Most of the time no one will see it or it can be covered up. Just enjoying stitching and worry about it later.
3- French knots are hard.
French knots get a bad wrap. Pun intended. They can be tricky, but once you get the hang of them they’re actually a lot of fun!
4-Embroidery kits are only for beginners.
Anyone can use an embroidery kit. This is why I create beginner, intermediate, and advanced kits. Sometimes it’s just nice to have everything there with no need to source it all. Other times it’s about learning a specific skill, and others it’s about loving the design. As someone who designs and sells embroidery kits, I have also bought advanced embroidery kits on goldwork because it’s a type of needlework I’m interested in learning too.
What other embroidery propaganda, myths, and untruths do you think should be on this list?

I’d love to know which one of these three you’d want to stitch first.

You might not believe me, but picking out stitches for your own project doesn’t have to be hard.
I often look at realistic photos and then try to find stitches that create a similar texture or pattern. Admittedly, you need to know what kind of embroidery stitches make what kinds of textures, so it gets a little tricky if you’re not as familiar with that.
But don’t worry. I’ve rounded up 6 of my go-to stitches for stems and branches in my latest blog post. There I share step-by-step how to create each stitch and what I’d use them for.
Happy stitching!

Let me tell you a secret...
I avoid using metallic and sparkly threads. It’s not because I don’t think they’re beautiful. It’s because they’re kind of a pain to stitch with.
They fray easily, unravel a bunch, kink up, and just aren’t that pleasant to stitch with (in my opinion). Which is why I’ve only used this type of thread for one of my embroidery kits- Bug Collector.
If you want to give stitching with this sparkly thread a try as well as stitch two types of stumpwork, then give my Bug Collector kit a try!
And if you’re looking for tips and tricks on working with metallic and other sparkly threads, be sure to head over to my blog. Just pop metallic thread in the search bar.

Tell me you’re a serial crafter without telling me you’re a serial crafter.

I almost forgot this is the whole point...
Sometimes you just have those days where you just need a break. That’s really why I picked embroidery back up in the first place. And now over a decade later, I can help you find that zen moment of stitching too.
